​Professor Wong Tien Yin elected Fellow of the Royal Society

On May 20, the Royal Society—the United Kingdom’s national academy of sciences—announced its newly elected Fellows and Foreign Members. Among them, Professor Wong Tien Yin, Vice-Provost of Tsinghua University and Senior Vice-Chancellor of Tsinghua Medicine, has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS).

According to the official website, Professor Wong has long demonstrated a strong commitment to the pioneering research and innovative application of artificial intelligence and digital technologies in the screening, diagnosis, and prediction of major ophthalmic and systemic diseases.

Professor Wong is a physician-scientist and innovator. He has held senior leadership roles in Singapore and Australia, including at the Duke-NUS Medical School, the SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medical Centre, the Singapore National Eye Centre and the University of Melbourne.

He has led pioneering research in artificial intelligence and digital technologies to enhance the screening, diagnosis, and prediction of major eye and systemic diseases. His AI research has been adopted in Singapore’s national diabetes screening programs and internationally. He has published extensively, with over 1,600 papers, including in The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, and JAMA.

Professor Wong has received numerous accolades, including the 16th Beijing Great Wall Friendship Award, the Arnall Patz Medal from the Macula Society, the Friedenwald Award from ARVO, the Australian Commonwealth Health Minister’s Award, and Singapore’s President’s Science Award and President’s Science and Technology Award. He is an elected Fellow of the Singapore National Academy of Sciences, an International Member of the U.S. National Academy of Medicine, and an International Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences.

His election as a Fellow is a testament to his impactful leadership and innovative work at the intersection of technology and medicine, further cementing Tsinghua University’s increasing influence in the global scientific landscape.

The Royal Society, founded in 1660, is the world’s oldest and most esteemed scientific academy in continuous existence. Its Fellowship honors individuals who have made substantial contributions to the advancement of natural knowledge.
